"Beyond Mashups: the New Challenges of SWS Based Geospatial Applications"
Mr Vlad Tanasescu - Knowledge Media Institute (KMi), Open University, UK

Manually built Geographic mashups have proved immensely popular: indeed space, mediated through realistic Web maps, seems to provide a better terrain for data integration rooted into human cognition than the more abstract textual Web. Projects such as eMerges [1] or SWING [2] apply Semantic Web Services (SWS) to the geospatial environment to automate or alleviate the integration process. However, the geospatial domain reveals recurring characteristics such as vagueness or need for multi-representation, and if these specificities are often described in the GIScience community, they are mostly ignored by mashups or SW enthusiasts. Therefore, the question is, what can the SWS community learn from GIScientists about geospatial modelling in particular, and “meaning” in general, and how can SWS help tackle these new challenges.
