"Impact of the Semantic Web on multimedia applications"
Dr Paola Hobson - Applications Research Europe, Motorola Labs, UK

Considerable research into the Semantic Web is ongoing, and over the past few years, researchers have started to look at application of these technologies in multimedia applications such as content search and retrieval, personalised content recommendation, and content sharing. However, there are challenges ahead if European industry is really to benefit from development and deployment of Semantic Web technologies, including interoperability, implementation, and intellectual property. In this presentation, we will review the practical issues associated with commercialising such technologies, using our experience with a personalised content discovery and sharing research project as an example, and we will discuss the question: are Semantic Web technologies really mature enough for commercial exploitation or alternatively, is the market not yet ready for what these technologies can offer?
