"Semantic Technologies for Multimedia Analysis and Applications"
Mr Thierry Declerck - DFKI GmbH, Language Technology Lab, Germany

The talk will address the topic of the "semantic gap" in the analysis of multimedia (MM) content. Human Language Technologies (HLT) and Semantic Web (SW) methods can help on this in providing for ontology-based semantic annotation of textual documents (including speech transcripts) that are associated with video and images, but also with a proposal for the ontology-based organization of the so-called low-level features resulting from MM analysis. We will describe an ontological framework that supports combined semantic annotation/indexing provided by HLT and SW on the one side, and the MM low-level features on the other side, as this is proposed in the EU Network of Excellence "K-Space" (Knowledge Space of semantic inference for automatic annotation and retrieval of multimedia content, www.k-space.eu).
At the same time we will try to critically recognize MM applications that could really benefit from those Semantic Technologies.

Preparatory material for this talk can be find at the K-Space Summer Schools on Multimedia Semantics 2006 (http://mkg.iti.gr/ssms2006/) and 2007 (http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/ssms07/), or at the K-Space repository for teaching material (https://teaching.k-space.eu/dspace/)
