"Geo-referencing the Semantic Web"
Dr. Pragya Agarwal – University College London, UK

With the increasing reliance on the World Wide Web and the technological developments in the search engines and the interface as well as the vast amount of spatial and earth sciences data and resources now located and available over the web, the number of people who use web services is expanding. The geosciences community is realising the potential that semantic web has to offer for development of web-based geographic services. The recent developments in the Semantic Web have great potential for the geospatial community, in specific, because the focus on the incorporation of data semantics will lead to better retrieval and more reliable integration methods by tapping into the semantics during the search process on the web. Nevertheless, the basic semantic web and the technological developments are not targeted to the specific needs of the geospatial community. This talk will discuss issues, challenges and opportunities in application of semantic technologies to the geospatial domain.
